Lot 190		Outstanding Collection of 20+ Relics and Artifacts from Great War Ships In History, USS Missouri, Wisconsin, North Carolina & More. Part One of two collections of certified relics from a variety of warships 1.) USS Missouri a particularly large section of teak that is identified "Over This Spot on 2 September, 1945, The Formal Surrender of Japan to the Allied Powers Was Signed plus 7 smaller souvenir sized teak pieces and hard back history of "The Mighty Mo" 2.) Teak from USS Wisconsin during renovation in 1987 laser cut letters 3) Teak from USS North Carolina and plaque. There are some foreign warship relics as well 4.) A remarkable relic of a brass crown still mounted on thick teak wood form the Isla de Luzon sunk in Manila Bay May, 1898 5.) HMS Hood (1919 -1941) ashtray from brass treads of gangway 6.) A rare gauge from HMS Champion WWI. Too many to mention but know there are relics from the HMS Iron Duke, HMS Warrior, USS Constitution USS Oregon and a large carved goblet from wood of the clipper ship "Federal George" engaged during the American Revolution. Lot 191		Outstanding Collection of Rare Relics and Artifacts from Great War Ships, Aircraft and Frigates. Part Two of a great collection of relics and commemoratives. 1.) Outstanding original and heavy section of oak timber from the USS New Hampshire (1818-1922) the last of the US 74 gun warships. The copper and bronze fastenings were by Paul Revere and Sons. Plaque and finely rendered original painting of ship in upper right corner with original wood nail affixed. 2.) Original round teak section with carved details taken from the HMS Iron Duke with brass bell inside, Brass plaque identifying affixed at top.3.) Two original percussion cap tins. One has Ordinance label dated "1884 USS Pensacola" fountain pen ink still very much legible. The other a label atop tin box where one can read "Captain W……." with both given their 100 years in age in amazing condition. 4.) Hand fashioned sewing box from USS Oregon 5.) Bell fashioned from downed German fighter plane in Britain for the RAF Benevolent Fund 6.) Brass tankard made from metal collected on battlefields of North Africa in WWII. The balance are other commemoratives to USS Enterprise, HMS Cambrian, men lost at sea, brass from USS North Carolina made into ashtray, a ships kitchen chop and more. Lot 193		Infantry Dress Helmet Insignia and Aiguillette ca. 1870s. Vintage original dress helmet insignia for the 12th Infantry ca. The Indian Wars to the Spanish American War. Also included is an aiguillette complete with gold dress chest cords with gold waffles, indeed oxidized given the years is complete. Nice pair for collectors of 19th century militaria. Lot 194		Spanish American War Shell Lamp -USS Maine, Elaborate Trench Art. The U.S.S. Maine was an American naval ship that sank in Havana Harbor during the Cuban revolt against Spain, an event that became a major political issue in the United States. The sinking became a rallying cry but considerable research even decades later reveal the Maine was not caused by a mine. Instead, a spontaneous combustion of coal in the bunker, next to magazine, was speculated to be the most likely cause. At any rate, the battle in the New York Journal and New York World, owned respectively by William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer, gave Maine intense press coverage, but employed tactics that would later be labeled "yellow journalism." Both papers exaggerated and distorted any information they could attain, sometimes even fabricating news when none that fit their agenda was available. Offered is a 6 pound shell casing from the U.S.S. Maine. This elaborate piece of trench art originally purchased with unusual dull brass casing with crude sockets, paper shades and engraved. This 6 Pounder Cartridge Came From The U.S.S. Maine Which Was Sunk In The Harbor of Havana, Cuba on 15th February, 1895. Engraved at base is an image of the crows nest and portion of battleship extending out of the water. Lamp was then re wired and chrome plated to be used for contemporary use 17 years ago. Also included are two vintage/antique photo postcards, one of the Maine just as it was about to sink, the other showing an image of the ship afloat and one after sinking on a 40th Anniversary Spanish War Veterans card, 1938. Lot 195		[Spanish American War] U.S. Silk Regimental Battle Flag With 45 Stars. Very scarce, military grade battle flag with the following characteristics: large, almost square-- 66 x 53 in.-- with 45 embroidered stars on each side of the canton, bullion fringe, and red, white, and blue sleeve along hoist edge. Some small splits at edges and a couple of small repairs otherwise in very good condition. Utah became the 45th state in 1896. The 45-star flag was used from then until 1907 when Oklahoma became a state. This was a patriotic period because the Spanish American War took place in 1898. A flag like this one was raised following the successful assault on San Juan Heights, made famous because of the participation of Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. Lot 196		US Army Model 1873 Trowel Bayonet. A well designed weapon/implement in steel with reinforcing spine to an overall length of 14.5 inches, this with age toning and light oxidation, still very nice condition. It fits the 4-5/70 Trapdoor Springfield Rifle. Includesthe leather scabbard with brass tip and US roundel. Well worn, dry and with a clumsy repair at the belt hinge using hot-glue. Lot 197		USS Yankee (1892-1908) Remarkable Collage of Flotsam From Wreckage of Navy Gunboat. The USS Yankee was built in 1892 in Newport News, Virginia for the Southern Pacific Railway. It was acquired by and commissione by the US Navy in 1898. The ship joined in The Spanish American War and The Battle of Guantánamo Bay. After her war service, the ship resumed a familiar duty�training. With naval militia reservists or Naval Academy midshipmen embarked, she spent the summer of 1908 cruising the Atlantic coast between Boston and Chesapeake Bay. There she ran aground, refloated but sank in Buzzards Bay. Offered is this collage of materials salvaged from the ship and re-created as if found in the bay. Small plaque reads U.S.S. Yankee (1892-1908) B. Mason (likely the artist) Consignor found through another source the vintage original sash adding immeasurably to the appeal. A most nique piece. Columbia stands on a map of the United States; in her left hand she holds aloft an American flag; in her right hand she holds a sword. A stirring, patriotic scene. Fine-. Lot 203		B-17 Bomber Painted by Fritz Willis, Gift of Studio Head Jack Warner to Lt. General Henry H. Arnold (1942). Spectacular art, gouache and ink on paper of the Boeing B-17D Bomber by acclaimed illustrator, Fritz Willis (1907-1979). After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, legendary director Howard Hawks, approached Lt. General Henry "Hap" Arnold, Commanding General of the Army Air Forces to assist with a film based on the experiences of a flight of B-17s, specifically the crew of the Mary-Ann that left Hamilton Field, California, on the night of December 6, 1941, and literally flew into the war the next morning at Pearl Harbor. That movie was the World War II film classic, "AIR FORCE" starring John Garfield, Arthur Kennedy, Gig Young, Harry Carey, directed by Hawks and produced by Jack Warner. Warner wanted this film ready for the anniversary of Pearl Harbor which then mobilized all the studios to produce films for the cause. The greatest contribution by Hollywood to the war effort was morale. Many of the movies produced during the war were patriotic rallying cries that affirmed a sense of national purpose. Combat films of the war years emphasized patriotism, group effort, and the value of individual sacrifices for a larger cause. To that end Jack Warner reached to his then in-studio artist and production designer Fritz Willis to create this special commission as a thank you to Lt. General Arnold in his making available a variety of planes for the production of the film "AIR FORCE" as well as access to personnel with technical expertise. The film is now considered a war-time classic. The artist Fritz Willis eventually left Warner Brothers and became one of the landmark commercial artists of the 20th Century, and a legend for his extraordinarily sensual pin-up art, highly prized and collected world-wide. Therefore, the uniqueness of this piece cannot be overstated. Art is 26 x 20" and framed to 36 x 30". There is a typed, torn and heavily taped notation that mentions the provenance saying Arnold gave Warner the painting which makes little sense given the artist was working at Warner Brothers. Lot 204		Early Travel Materials Focusing On Japan, Post WWII, plus Early Aviation Materials. Collection of rarely seen vintage material regarding the Western approach to Japan post WWII. The most unusual is a very well done Guide to Japan issued by the US Army in September, 1945 that can best be described as a cultural, historical and respectful evaluation of a country the US was at war with only months prior. Includes maps, photos, art and printed inside back page an open letter by Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz with the final sentences: "Now we turn to the great tasks of reconstruction and restoration. I am confident that we will be able to apply the same skill, resourcefulness and keen thinking to these problems as were applied to the problems of winning the victory." The second is a massive 600 page published history and encyclopedia with photos distributed by Fujiya Hotel Ltd. in 1949 entitled "We Japanese". This book is a marvel even by today's standards, full of customs, history and cultural traditions. In excellent condition. The balance of the collection involves other post WWII era Japanese guides, all adding up to a phenomenal campaign in bringing Japan to the fore. Also early JAL airline ephemera. Lot 205		USS Arizona Related Ephemera Including Sterling Silver Cup to an Officer Inscribed USS Arizona and Sterling Silver Medal. Scarce collection of objects related to the one of the most historic battleships of the 20th Century. The first two pieces prove the most significant and rare in this collection 1.) A sterling silver presentation 10½" tall cup (14" on base) inscribed to Lt. and Mrs. F. H. Gilmer from The 5th Division U.S.S. Arizona. Based on the marks at base, this was made by Gorham Silversmiths and based on the horn hallmark from 1919, about 5 years after the Arizona was launched 2.) A sterling silver trophy fob and in high relief on verso it reads "Small Arms Trophy U.S.S. Arizona, 1927-1928. The other pieces include a WWII era US Navy Signal Lantern. This piece dates correctly but lantern was originally sold as from the U.S.S. Arizona. We cannot find any serial number directly relating to the battleship save for the name written at bottom and the bill of sale. But certainly lantern of the period. The other pieces are a 25th Anniversary commemorative medal of the attack on Pearl Harbor, a post WWII Japanese flag unused cigarette case, the 50th Anniversary Pearl Harbor Philatelic collection and excavated wood knob from the Harbor. Lot 208		Vintage, Original WWII Poster: "America's Answer! Production" by Jean Carlu -- One of the Greatest WWII Homefront Posters. French artist Jean Carlu (1900-1997) spent World War II in the United States, where he executed a number of important poster designs. This poster was designed for the U.S. government's war effort at home. It earned Carlu the top award from the New York Director's Club Exhibition in 1941 and remains today a favorite of collectors. We are pleased to offer a vintage, original example of this poster, rolled, never folded, in Fine condition. A small "bite" missing from the lower right corner and a couple of edge chips at lower right are the only blemishes (easily matted out) on this otherwise superb poster. 38 x 30".
